In this episode, Alistair Bryce-Clegg, and International Educational Consultant Sue Asquith, explore ways for practitioners to enable their outdoor areas to be spaces of continuous provision all year round.
All children should have access to quality outdoor play, and a well-resourced learning environment will allow this to happen regardless of the weather. Some settings may have sheltered areas or a bank of resources to allow children to make the most of the great outdoors. However, if this is not the case, it doesn’t mean that the outdoors must be inaccessible at certain points in the year.
Throughout this episode, Sue discusses the importance of practitioners having a shared ethos and attitude towards outdoor play. This shouldn’t be encouraged only within the setting and externally by encouraging parents to be on board. This could be achieved through having a kit of resources available in the school which children can access dependent on the weather or season. Or, ask and encourage the parents to provide children with the resources needed to allow outdoor exploration all year round.
Examples of the resources children and settings should have access to in order to support learning in all types of weather:
- Waterproofs clothes (coat or suits)
- Winter hat or sun hat
- Scarves and gloves
- Wellie boots
- Umbrellas
- Sun cream
- Sunglasses
