The Laboratory, a place to encourage exploration in the arts and sciences
The light-filled ground floor is used as an exhibition space with eight superb science laboratories, a 240-seat auditorium and five informatics suites completing this stunning building.
The aim was to transform the five informatics suites within The Laboratory into simple clutter-free spaces that can be changed to suit the purpose of different users. At Dulwich College, the teaching of critical thinking is one of the ways in which learning is enhanced and it was important for these spaces to reflect that.
Creating agile and reconfigurable work spaces
For pupils from all years, across all science and humanities disciplines, the Informatics Suites provide a blank canvas on which students can explore their subject and teachers can try new approaches in a more fluid environment.
With dry-wipe LearningSurface® walls, mobile dry-wipe LearningSurface® smile tables, stackable chairs and a mobile teacher station, these sleek spaces are inherently agile and non-prescriptive.
How the space is deployed is entirely up to the users; furniture can be arranged in rows, clusters, a large seminar-style horseshoe or circle, depending on what suits the task in hand. Students can bring in their own IT if needed.

The Result
Writable surfaces were introduced to the room. These dynamic furniture staples can be moved around at will and have proven ideally suited to critical thinking tasks such as mind maps, brainstorms and lists, providing an expansive space for the students’ ideas and thoughts.
