Episode 4: Bringing the outdoors into all areas of learning with Sue Asquith

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Throughout episode 4, Alistair Bryce-Clegg, and International Educational Consultant Sue Asquith, talk about the value of using outdoor spaces in all areas of learning across the Early Years framework.

Sue and Alistair share practical ways to incorporate all areas of learning into your outdoor spaces to support children’s learning and development. From PSED and physical development to mathematics and communication and language development, this episode uncovers why having a holistic approach to outdoor play is key.

Developing key skills

Sue shares various examples of how practitioners can quickly and accessibly encourage developing maths and literacy skills whilst outdoors. From simple suggestions such as counting the children as they return from the outdoors to the indoors and vice versa and asking the children if they can find a matching pair of wellies, and creating conversations around why they’re matching.

For early literacy skills, Sue also suggests subtle ideas to help support areas of Phase 1 Phonics. For example, creating a music wall with pots and pans and exploring the different sounds that can be achieved or testing the difference in sound from tapping a metal railing compared to natural wood.

By creating these fun and engaging learning moments, led by the child’s genuine interest, we subconsciously encourage the children to think more creatively and use their critical-thinking skills to make decisions.
